King’s square
Back to all places
Welcome to Plaza del Rey, one of the most emblematic squares in Barcelona. This place is witness to centuries of history.
This square receives this title due to its close relationship with the Royal House of the Crown of Aragon. This building in front of you was the Royal Palace, residence of the Counts of Barcelona and later of the kings of the Crown of Aragon.
You can admire the Palace, whose Gothic architecture is impressive for its robustness and majesty. This palace was the center of politics and royal life in medieval Barcelona.
For instance, in this palace, is where the Catholic kings, Isabella and Ferdinand, received Christopher Columbus on his return from his first voyage to America.
As you can see, the upper part of the tower of the palace is shaped like a crown, because just below the tower, there is a chapel that was only for the king and queen.
The cathedral is very close, but here they could celebrate their private masses and ceremonies.
