Sant Iu square

You are located in front of the oldest entrance to the cathedral, known as St. Ivo’s Gate. This historic door is one of the few vestiges of the medieval architecture of the original cathedral, which began in the 13th century.

The Cathedral of Barcelona has undergone numerous reforms, but this entrance retains its original charm. It is a small corner full of history in the heart of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter.

Stand in front of the door and look at the cathedral windows from left to right and you can see the evolution of the cathedral. The construction of the cathedral was during centuries and there was a change in the architecture from the Romanesque style, such as the rounded windows on the left, to the Gothic style, such as the pointed windows on the right.

Go ahead and turn left at the first corner.

As you stroll through this district, you can admire its narrow, dark streets, which convey the atmosphere of yesteryear. The buildings surrounding the cathedral maintain a classic architecture, with gothic details that take us back to past centuries.
